While a vacancy will disrupt the process, a classified-choice vote count in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District is expected to take just over a week to finish if no candidate emerges with a majority of votes in first place in Tuesday’s election.

The contest between Democratic Rep Jared Golden, former Republican Bruce Poliquin and independent Tiffany Bond will be one of the most-watched U.S. House contests in a conservative-trend district that has gone twice for former President Donald Trump . It will be the only major race in Maine to be decided by the classified choice vote this year.

Here is an update on how the system works and how the count is performed.
