Solent Gateway Ltd, the UK’s fastest growing port, is recruiting for a range of roles and is highlighting how transferable skills can open new career paths by sharing the story of its port security manager, Perry Emery.

Perry, born in Portsmouth but raised in the New Forest where he currently resides, joined Solent Gateway Ltd in 2021, previously worked in bar management before moving to the leisure industry as a personal trainer and then holding the role. as a manager of a fitness club for seven years. As part of this role, Perry earned numerous health and safety awards and subsequently joined the organization’s health and safety committee.

“I really found my passion for health safety in my position as a fitness club manager and was heavily involved in coordinating with the health and safety department. I felt there was a lot of potential for career progression and the expansion of my knowledge as I gained practical experience. I felt I had enough experience to make the move and pursue my new found passion, but within a port security and security task with the role in Solent Gateway, ”said Perry.

“Working at Solent Gateway involves working with a myriad of different backgrounds and professions on a daily basis and this has also led to learning as I go, which is extremely rewarding and satisfying.”

Describing a typical week in his role as head of health and safety, Perry states: “Authorization and production of passes for vehicles and animals, update of the spreadsheets of the date of introduction / training / safety event, investigation of safety events / observation of dangers. I will also arrange fire related work / overhaul / maintenance, construction related training for other departments, HSEQ tasks and safety related tasks. No week is the same, but these are some of the regular topics or activities along with assisting the safety officer and the HSEQ manager where possible. “

The port based in Marchwood, Southampton is currently under development to create 64 hectares of exceptional, high quality, port-centered logistics space with excellent connectivity by sea, rail and road for commercial activities.
